Roman Catholic Marriage in Las Vegas

There is no "quickie" way for Catholics to be married in Las Vegas.  Catholic marriages (as a valid sacramental union) cannot be witnessed in a hotel, casino, wedding chapel or outdoor arena in Las Vegas.  Roman Catholics wishing to marry validly should be suspect of any so-called (roman) catholic priest offering such accommodations.  For further information, please contact the Diocesan Tribunal Office, 702-735-1210, Monsignor Francis Vivona, S.T.M., J.C.L.

St. Paul talks about the fact that married couples have to deal with the anxieties of the world.  Sometimes those stresses can really have a negative impact on our marriages.  Get away from all those worldly anxieties and take time to just focus on each other by making a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend.

The next weekends are February 10-12, and May 4-6, 2012 in Boulder City. Early registration is highly recommended.

For more information, call Wayne and Marcia Kessler at 702-566-8753. For information on Spanish-language weekends, call Jose and Patti Santiago at 702-544-3755.

Seniors across the valley are increasingly more alone, depressed, homebound, and isolated. Your daily phone call will ensure that an isolated senior is safe and has someone to talk to on a regular basis. LIFE LINES

Updated 1/19/12

“If anyone sheds the blood of man,

by man shall his blood be shed.
For in the image of God

has man been made.”
(Genesis 9:6-7)

January 22, 1973, ... a date chiseled in stone .... a date which opened the gates for legal infanticide ... a date burned forever into our history as an abomination.  LifeNews reported that nearly 55 million unborn children have been killed by abortion. Abortion takes the lives of 1.3 million unborn children a year, 3,300 per day, and one every 25 seconds.  Yet the slaughter continues with the protection of the law. When will enough people realize that from the moment of conception a life exists ... a life that has been created by God for a specific purpose?  When will the words from Genesis quoted above become engraved in the minds and hearts of our citizens and our lawgivers so that they stop the bloodshed?
Abraham Lincoln, reflecting on the plague of slavery wrote that our nation cannot continue to exist half slave and half free.  President Reagan many years later echoed the same sentiment when he said that our nation cannot continue to exist if some lives are protected under the law and others are not granted protection.  Thus, we need to look inside ourselves and ask, How can I, who am only one, change the law of the country?  One thing is for certain; if we do nothing, there will be no change.
Prayer is the start point and the most powerful weapon we have.  So, how about starting a spiritual bouquet?  I challenge everyone who reads this article to commit to a certain number of prayers for a set time, offering them up for an end to abortion and an establishment of a life ethic in our country.  Spiritual bouquets consist of whatever prayers you would like to offer for this intention ... It could be a rosary a day for so many days; it could be mass and communion for a certain number of days; or it could be a novena, or fasting and/or abstinence for a prescribed length of time that you choose.  Prayer works. England’s secret weapon during the dangerous days of World War II was a minute of silent prayer every day at a certain time.  Citizens were reminded by a tolling bell on the radio to turn to prayer.  Our Blessed Mother pleads with us in every apparition to “Pray, my children, pray for peace, pray for an end to abortion.”  Ask Mary; ask the saints; ask the Holy Spirit to direct you in this effort to bring about an end to the biggest shame in our history.

PRAYER DURING TIME OF ECONOMIC CRISIS

Gracious God,
We know that your love is infinite and that you care about all areas of our life.
In this time of economic insecurity, help us to trust that all of our security is in you.
Keep us mindful that you always have and always will provide for our needs.
Apart from you we can do nothing.

Merciful God,
We ask that you give our leaders the wisdom to guide our nation and the world
out of the current economic crisis.
Help us to protect the poor and all those who are struggling during this difficult time.
Provide for their needs and give them hope.
Open new opportunities for them and furnish the resources they need to live with dignity.  Encourage those who have enough to share essential resources
with those who lack the necessities of life,
and to do so with humble, grateful and loving hearts.

We ask this through Christ, Our Lord.  Amen.

A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States

Over 800 years ago, Christ challenged St .Francis of Assisi, "Francis, rebuild my church which is falling into disrepair". That challenge is very much needed today. If you desire to answer that challenge, you are invited to explore walking in the footsteps of St. Francis through the Secular Franciscan order.  For further information and to attend a meeting you may call Madge at 702-453-2417 or Frank Laverty 702-339-2501.

Mercy Volunteer Corps, a lay volunteer program sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy provides opportunities for men and women over the age of 21 to give a year of service to those in need.  The emphasis of the program is service, community and prayer.  Volunteer possibilities include teaching of nursing, working in homeless shelters, clinics and social service agencies in urban and rural settings throughout the United States.  Room, board, medical insurance and a small stipend are provided.  Loan deferments are available.  Contact: Mercy Volunteer Corps Office at 215-641-5535 or Sheila Devereux, RSM at 415-751-9574 or E-mail Mercy Voulnteer:
