A MAN WHO IS A MEMBER OF A RELIGIOUS ORDER, BUT IS NOT ORDAINED OR STUDYING FOR THE PRIESTHOOD.

God Calls to Religious Life

When we were baptized into the Church, we were given the equal dignity to be called God’s sons and daughters. Each of us, in our own unique way, also has received a “vocation” or call from God. God calls us to holiness and calls us to service – to continue the mission of Jesus Christ by preaching the Good News and building the Kingdom of God.

Each vocation or call from God can be lived out in various lifestyles: single, married, priest, brother, sister, or deacon.  The lifestyle one chooses is the fundamental way a person decides to relate to God and other people. There are two ways to live as a vowed Viatorian. As a vowed Viatorian, a man can serve as a brother or a priest.

The Viatorians came to Nevada at the invitation of Bishop Robert J. Dwyer in 1954 to teach at Bishop Gorman High School.  Over the past half century Viatorian brothers have ministered in Las Vegas at St. Viator Catholic Community, Bishop Gorman High School, and The Catholic Center (chancellery).

Former Brothers of the Diocese

Brother Corey Brost, C.S.V.

Brother Corey Brost’s first ministerial assignment was in 1989-1990 as a lawyer assisting low income women on the west side of Chicago with legal problems.  The following year he earned a Masters Degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University Chicago.  With his new degree in hand Brother Brost moved to Springfield, Illinois and began to work at St. Joseph Parish as a Youth Minister until 1994.  When an opportunity arose to do high school youth ministry, Brother Brost accepted the position as Campus Minister at Bishop Gorman High School in 1994 and continued in that same position through the 1998 school year.  During this time he was influential in starting numerous service projects for students and leading retreats for youth.  Because of his successful work with young people, the Viatorian Provincial asked Brother Brost to serve as Vocation Director.  He did so for four years, creating opportunities for Viatorians to connect with high school and college age students.  After leaving vocation ministry, Brother Brost worked at St. Viator High School for one year, 2002-2003, focusing his attention on creating a faith formation program for faculty, parents and alumni.  In 2003 he started theological studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and was ordained a deacon in September 2005.  Brother Brost will be ordained a priest on April 28, 2006 at St. Viator Parish in Chicago and looks forward to his first assignment in a Viatorian parish as a priest.

Brother Dale Barth’s first assignment was in 1963 at the Viatorian retreat center in Pistakee Bay, Illinois.  At that time the Retreat House had weekly retreats for Catholic high school students.  Brother Barth spent three years there until he was assigned to the Provincial House in Evanston, Illinois from 1965-1967 where he served as the house buyer.  His next ministry assignment took him to St. Viator High School.  Brother Barth gave 23 years of dedicated service to St. Viator students from 1967-1990.  During those years he had different responsibilities.  Early in his career at the high school he was the book store manager, later he became the Assistant Dean of Students and taught Religion, and his last six years he was the Building Manager.  In 1990 he left the high school and started a new assignment that took him to the Viatorian Province Center in Arlington Heights, working in the office of the treasurer.  His duties for the next six years included oversight of building maintenance and grounds, besides being the office bookkeeper.  His experience working in the business office was the training ground for his next assignment in 1996 as the parish business manager at St. Viator Parish, Las Vegas, Nevada.  When he returned to Illinois in 1999 after working three years in Las Vegas, Brother Barth took a one-year sabbatical and prepared himself for a new ministry, the Ministry of Care.  After completing the program at the Archdiocese of Chicago he moved to Maternity BVM Parish and worked as a pastoral care minister from 2000-2003.  In 2003 he was ordained a permanent deacon for the Diocese of Joliet, Illinois.  Brother Barth was asked to serve as assistant novice master, working with Viatorian novices at St. Patrick Parish in Kankakee, Illinois.  Since returning to the Chicagoland area, Brother Barth is serving as a deacon at St. Viator Parish in Chicago.
