The Future
Since its inception, our diocese has been blessed with a growing number of people committed to the mission of Christ. In the past decade, the Catholic population in the Diocese of Las Vegas has more than doubled and consists of 35 parishes and missions. And this is just the beginning.
Service, Growing Faith in our Community is the first step in implementing our forward looking plan to ensure that members of every parish are able to have their own intimate encounter with Christ and in turn strengthen our presence in Las Vegas through worship, service and baptism so that we are better prepared to reach out to all people.
Together with our clergy and parish leadership, we have established the most critical needs within our diocese that will allow every one of our members to experience God in a personal and meaningful way. Through the development of new parishes and ministry facilities in areas that face the most immediate need, we will create benefits for all parish members including:
• Smaller and more intimate parish families
• Relieving the growing pressures and time constraints placed on our clergy members to allow us to sustain pastoral presence in all parishes.
• Increase the accessibility of the Catholic Church to all people
• Strengthen the local caring and charitable ministries
• Facilities that can accommodate and meet the growing needs of our city
Development of New Parishes
After careful evaluation of the current situation in the diocese including demographic studies, growth trends and master plans, together with current parish locations, the diocese identified four priority areas where they need to acquire land for the purpose of developing parishes. The areas prioritized for land acquisition to meet immediate needs are:
• Southern Highlands Area
• Centennial
• West Summerlin
• Cheyenne Hills
These areas have all experienced tremendous growth as well as the accompanying shortage of land and increased prices. A parish requires an estimated 10 acres and at least 20 acres if there is to be a school attached. These factors combined with the fact that it takes approximately three years for a parish to establish itself and to build its first facility makes the urgency of our efforts all the more poignant.
In recognition of the importance of these efforts to the entire diocesan community of Las Vegas, the clergy and parish leaders have joined the diocese and the Bishop in this important capital campaign. This is also why, during the 2006 calendar year, the Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA) will be suspended. This capital campaign is a call to stewardship and prayerful consideration by each parishioner and family of their role as stewards of God’s gifts.
Existing Parish Needs
Bishop Pepe is committed to seeing that all parishes within the Diocese of Las Vegas receive the support and leadership they need as he understands that most people’s intimate encounter with Christ is realized through their local parish. This diocesan campaign will also allow parishes to receive a portion of the funds raised to address its individual parish needs.
