Catechist Certification/Formation Process for the Diocese of Las Vegas

Level I Basic Certification
Total Hours Required: 30 clock hours
15 hours Methodology (Skills)
15 hours Doctrine (Information)
plus Personal Faith Journey (Formation) in the form of an Evening Reflection or Retreat

Level II Advanced Certification
Total Hours Required: 45 clock hours plus Level I
15 hours Methodology (Skills)
30 hours Doctrine (Information)
plus Personal Faith Journey (Formation) in the form of an Evening Reflection or Retreat

Level III On-Going Certification
Total Hours Required: 15 clock hours plus Level I & II
15 hours in Methodology (Skills) or Doctrine (Information)
plus Personal Faith Journey (Formation) in the form of an Evening Reflection or Retreat

*To maintain the status of a fully certified catechist in the Diocese of Las Vegas, at least every three years one must complete a combination of 15 hours in the area of Methodology or Doctrine according to the Catechists' individual needs. One must also include a reflection/retreat experience every three years.

The Church entrusts the ministry of catechesis to exemplary followers of Christ with unquestioned personal integrity and moral character:

Positive qualities in candidates should be: faith that manifests itself in their piety and daily life; love for the Church and communion with its pastors; apostolic spirit and missionary zeal; love for their brothers and sisters and a willingness to give generous service; sufficient education; the respect of the community; the human, moral and technical qualities necessary for the work of a catechist, such as dynamism, good relations with others, etc.
